Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) comes in two forms – cosmetic microneedling and medical microneedling. Cosmetic microneedling can be done at home using a device that can penetrate the skin up to a depth of 0.3mm.
The medical needling device (Dermica pen) used in the Bexley clinic has adjustable length needles that can penetrate the skin from 0.25 up to 2.5mm. Making channels into the epidermis and dermis releases growth factors that promote scarless healing and the deposition of normal collagen rather than scar collagen. These devices should only be used by trained nurses and doctors. The advantage of using the microneedling pen, as opposed to the old dermarollers, is that this treatment is virtually pain free.
It is excellent for treating fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne and scarring.
