Botulinum toxin acts by blocking acetylcholine, the chemical which transmit electrical impulses that cause muscle contractions.

Botox injections are relatively safe when performed by an experienced medical professional. The most common side effects include temporary swelling or bruising at the injection site, headache or flu-like symptoms. 

Doctors generally recommend against using botulinum toxin when pregnant or breast-feeding, since the effects on the baby aren’t known. 

Botulinum toxin A must only be used under a qualified medical practitioners care, it can be dangerous if administered incorrectly. A full medical history is needed, including previous use of toxins/fillers, any allergies and medications that you are currently taking. 

Botulinum toxin injections usually begin working a few days after treatment. Depending on the problem being treated, the effect may last for three to six months. The results will vary between individuals and this will be discussed with you during the initial consultation. To maintain the effect, you will need regular follow-up injections. 

The injections use very small needles, are quick and minimally invasive. Most clients tell us any discomfort is minimal and some describe it as a small pinching sensation.
